Sales tax
Flat rate
By default, sales tax is calculated with a flat rate that you can set in your Planroom Settings on the Orders and Downloads screens.
Make sure to set these for your state, especially if you need to charge sales tax for digital downloads in your state. Sales tax for print orders can be adjusted after you receive the order, however, download tax is charged to your customer at the time of the download, so it's important to have that set properly.
Live sales tax calculations
We provide an optional integration with TaxJar to calculate sales tax rates in real-time. This is helpful if you are in a state where sales tax is calculated based on the destination instead of origin, or if you have a presence in multiple states where sales tax can get a bit tricky based on your nexus locations.
There are a few things to know about live sales tax calculations.
Ensure your locations are set up
To determine your nexus locations for tax purposes, make sure you have all your shop locations set up in your Planroom Settings with full addresses. These are all sent to TaxJar for each calculation.
Set flat rate for fallback
It's possible that a live sales tax calculation can fail. TaxJar could be temporarily down, the user-entered address location could be invalid, among other reasons.
It's important to have a flat tax rate set up on your Orders and Downloads settings pages, even if you rely on live sales tax calculations. These flat rates will be used as fallbacks if a live lookup fails for any reason.
Viewing tax calculation details
You can open an order in your Control Center to view tax details. If any tax rate was applied, you will see a small link "View tax calculation" next to the tax rate:
Click on this link and you will see all of the tax details and breakdown, including jurisdictions.
This link also shows up for any downloads where sales tax is applied.
Tax-exempt projects
Sometimes you may need to exclude sales tax from orders on a specific project.
You can open a project in your Control Center, go down to the Options box on the lower-right, and add a tag of tax-exempt
:
Orders or downloads for this project will not have any sales tax added.
